Shocks
and Struts
It's
beautiful to watch a baby stand and sway to music, but when your car
starts to sway, it's time to think about checking out the suspension
system.
The
old-fashioned way - stomping your boot hard on the bumper to see how
long it takes for the bouncing to stop - was good in its day, but
today's painted, rubberized bumpers aren't made for that kind of shock
absorber analysis. You might get some of the same bouncing
effect by pressing down on the front or rear of the car, but try to
avoid the bendable plastic or metal skin of your vehicle.
What
you really look for when you check the suspension system are loose
or damaged parts or, in severe suspension circumstances, parts that
are actually missing. That's one of the reasons why an immediate
search is necessary if your car exhibits strange rattling when it
goes over a bump.
Those
clanging sounds can indicate broken shocks
or, rarely, broken springs, although a constant vibration as you are
driving along can also mean the shock
absorbers or struts
are damaged or worn.
"If shock absorbers were like air
filters or tires, you wouldn't hesitate to inspect them," say
automotive engineers. But a worn shock
or strut, unlike a clogged filter or a
flat tire, won't disable the car. But it can do worse, our warning
from Bay Auto Care. Because of the loss of ride control, even
one bad shock absorber can lead to an accident.
